What is a user goal

User goals are high-level activities that the user wants to achieve by using the product. This helps you focus on "what the user wants" instead of dealing with "what the product could do."

How to collect user goals with StoriesOnBoard AI

Collecting user goals with StoriesOnBoard AI is a simple and highly efficient process that can save a lots of time when a new project is initiated. To use StoriesOnBoard AI the functionality must be enabled on the workspace. To be able to collect user goals the product context form must be filled.

Collect user goals on an empty story map

If you start with a new project from scratch, fill the product context form and follow the steps below to collect user goals using StoriesOnBoard AI:

  1. Make sure StoriesOnBoard AI is enabled on your workspace

  2. Create a story map

  3. Fill out the product context form - Learn more.

  4. Select the "Collect user goals" option

  5. [optional] - Select the user persona you want to focus on

  6. [optional] - Provide more details for the first user goals

  7. Select user goals to be added to the backlog

Once you selected the "Collect user goals" option you will be able to select a user persona to be considered.

How to use the Collect User Goals dialog

If you want to add new user goals to the story map, the AI will ask for more information. Additional information is optional but highly effective in collecting the right backlog items and building a proper product.

Selecting a user persona helps StoriesOnBoard AI to focus on that specific target user and its goals.

Adding more details can narrow the scope — otherwise, StoriesOnBoard AI will come up with user goals based on the product description. This field is frequently used if you want to focus on a specific field like 'integrations,' 'collaboration features', or even 'UX improvement.' This field is also helpful if you have a PRD or a meeting note.

StoriesOnBoard AI assistant will offer you the user persona related goals. You can select which one you want to add to your product backlog.


The selected goals will be added to the backlog.

To collect additional user goals open the AI menu and click on "Collect user goals". Then select which user goals you want to add to your backlog. You can instantly add new goals on the story map as well by selecting the AI assistant icon to add more goals.

Hints

  • StoriesOnBoard AI always tries to determine the optimal size of a user goal and can adjust brainstormed goals to your needs if you request new goals after adding a few yourself.

  • Frequently repeated or common goals should be added by you: Sign up, manage profile settings, manage subscription, etc.

Collect user goals on an existing story map

You can also improve an existing solution with additional user goals using StoriesOnBoard AI. In this case, you need to fill out the product context form and follow the steps below to collect user goals using StoriesOnBoard AI:

  1. Open the story map

  2. Fill the product context form - Learn more.

  3. Select AI Assist menu

  4. Click to "Collect user goals"

  5. Select user goals to be added to the backlog
    or

  6. Click on the AI assistant icon on the story map to add more user goals

Then select a persona you want to add user goals for and include any specific scope if needed. StoriesOnBoard AI assistant will offer you new user goals. Simply select which one should be added to your product backlog. The new goals will be added to your story map as following.

If you are not satisfied with the result, you can dismiss it and ask for new ideas. Some results might not fit well in your project — they could be out of scope, similar to the existing goals or overlapping with existing goals, etc.
