What is the user story map template and how does it help

The user story map template is helping the team to act quickly and efficiently when they need to take advantage of a product backlog they already used but they need to make a difference or create a new variation of their solution they build.

Imagine when you have a product you are working on and you need to create multiple user story maps where the beginning of the project is always the same. To eliminate the pain to keep creating the same story map over and over again, you can create a user story map template instead of wasting time on creating the same story map again and again.

What does the story map template include

The story map template you create will include the following attributes:

  • collaborators

  • card colors

  • card annotations

  • user personas

  • story cards

  • custom statuses

  • custom AI templates

How to create a new user story map template

  1. Select the Product which you want to create the template on

  2. Navigate to the "Story maps" menu

  3. Select the "Story map templates" option

  4. Proceed with "Create a new template" button

  5. Name your story map template then hit "Create"

  6. Choose the visibility of your template

  7. Create the template by adding details to your story map

  8. Changes are automatically saved

Select the Product which you want to create the template on. Then navigate to the "Story maps" menu and select the "Story map templates" option.


Proceed with "Create a new template" button.

Name your story map template and choose the visibility of your template. Then proceed with "Create".

Create the template by adding details to your story map. Changes are automatically saved. Once you finished, you can use this story map as a template and create a new project based on it.

How to create a new story map based on one of your user story map template

  1. Choose the right Product where your template is located

  2. Select the "Add new user story map" option

  3. Choose the "Create from template" option

  4. Name your story map

  5. Select the template you want to use

  6. Proceed with "Create"

Choose the "Create from template" option.

Name your story map and select the template you want to use. Then proceed with "Create".

Your new story map will be created based on the template you selected. You can now make progress and improve your solution.

How to create a user story map template based on an existing story map

To turn one of your existing user story map into a story map template, make sure you are using the Classic story map interface. (You can any time switch between the Classic and NextGen story map interface.).

  1. Open the story map which your want to turn into a story map template

  2. Make sure you switched for the Classic user story map interface

  3. Select the three dots menu in the menu bar

  4. Select the "Copy as a template" option

Then select the three dots menu in the menu bar and proceed with the "Copy as a template" option to create a template based on your story map which you can use later.
