StoriesOnBoard & Jira integration overview

Integrating your story map with a Jira project allows teams to plan more effectively, utilizing the visual power of story mapping to achieve transparency and shared understanding among stakeholders. Bring the team around to the story map to see the big picture and take advantage of real-time and bidirectional sync with Jira to keep everyone up to date at all time. The integration makes it possible to plan releases on the story map and push cards to Jira for execution and keep your backlog in sync.With the powerful integration between StoriesOnBoard and Jira you can build and manage amazing products from the very beginning. This allows to do product discovery with user centric approach to build great products that users love.

Who can setup the Jira integration

You must have Admin role on the story map on StoriesOnBoard to be able to setup the integration with Jira. On the Jira side you must hold Admin rights as well.

Before you get started, make sure you completed all the required configurations and set up the webhook which is required to enable the real-time bidirectional sync between StoriesOnBoard and Jira.

How to setup Jira integration on NextGen story map

  1. Open the story map

  2. Go to “Settings“

  3. Select “Integration settings”

  4. Select "Jira"

  5. Authenticate in Jira

  6. Authorize access to your site

  7. Select Jira project to connect

  8. Choose synchronization method

  9. Setup what you want to keep in sync

  10. Setup export settings

  11. Setup import settings

  12. Setup status mapping

Step-by-step guide to link your story map to a Jira project

Open the story map you want to connect to your Jira project. Go to "Settings" and select "Integration settings".

Select Jira to connect with and proceed with "Connect".

You must authenticate in Jira in the next step as below.

Select the site you want to connect and proceed with "Accept".

Once your connection is successful you can see all those Jira projects which you have access to. Select the right Jira project to connect your story map with. Then hit "Connect project".

The integration setup wizard will guide you through on each steps. To get started you must select the preferred synchronization method.

  • sync only issue types on third level

  • sync top level structure

    • in this case the top level cards will be connected as Epics

    • second level cards won't sync

    • third level issues will be synced and keep connection with Epics

  • sync second level structure

    • in this case top level card won't sync

    • second level cards will be connected as Epics

    • third level issues will be synced and keep connection with Epics

Setup what you would like to keep in sync between StoriesOnBoard and Jira. We support real-time and bidirectional sync for the following:

  • sync title changes

  • sync description changes

  • sync estimation changes (additional settings required)

  • sync releases (additional settings required)

Setup export settings. Select the exporting issue type from the list. You can also enable StoriesOnBoard card link to the Jira issues as an attachment.

Setup import settings. Select the issue types you wish to import and synchronize between StoriesOnBoard and Jira.

To avoid making your story map becoming huge you can also ignore closed issues on import.

Stay in control and allow editors to import new cards from Jira if needed.

Setup status mapping. You can match your statuses on StoriesOnBoard to your Jira statuses so you can alway stay up-to-date at all time during the entire product lifecycle.

In case you have any custom workflow at place in Jira, you can also create your own custom workflow on StoriesOnBoard and match them.

Congratulations! You are now ready to take your backlog management to the next level. You are able to push cards from StoriesOnBoard to your Jira project or even import them from Jira.

Jira issue keys on cards

When a card is connected to Jira, the Jira issue key is displayed on the card on the story map as well. This allows you to easily find or identify issues on the story map without even opening each cards on the board.
