How to import issues from Azure DevOps using a query

Overview

Using a query in Azure DevOps fro your import you can further drive what you want to visualize on your story map from an Azure DevOps project. You have the possibility to import only those issues from Azure DevOps to StoriesOnBoard that match to your query. This is very useful when you have a large Azure DevOps project but you only want to focus on certain set of issues.

You can select pre-defined Azure DevOps queries to filter the work items for your import.

Please make sure that in Azure DevOps you are using "Flat list of work items" StoriesOnBoard only support Flat list of work items at the moment.

There are two cases when you can use queries for importing issues from Azure DevOps:

  • Create a new story map which has no cards and use a query to import issues from Azure DevOps

  • You have an existing story map and you want to use a query to import issues from Azure DevOps

How to import issues from Azure DevOps using a query

Case 1 - Create a new story map which has no cards and use a query to import issues from Azure DevOps

  1. create a new story map

  2. setup Azure DevOps integration for the story map

  3. once you have an active integration, visit "Settings"

  4. open "Integration settings"

  5. select "Go to Integration Settings in Classic view"

  6. you will be redirected to the Classic story map interface

  7. click on "Advanced import filter" to see your queries you have access to in Azure DevOps

  8. select a query you wish to use

  9. click "Save"

  10. visit "Import and sync changes from Azure DevOps"

Case 2 - You have an existing story map and you want to use a query to import issues from Azure DevOps

  1. open your story map

  2. open "Settings"

  3. select "Integration settings"

  4. select "Go to Integration Settings in Classic view"

  5. you will be redirected to the Classic story map interface

  6. click on "Advanced import filter" to see your queries you have access to in Azure DevOps

  7. select a query you wish to use

  8. click "Save"

  9. visit "Import and sync changes from Azure DevOps"

Please note if you have an existing story map and you enter a query to import additional issues from Azure DevOps to your story map, we will unlink all cards on the story map that is not matching to your query.

Step-by-step guide to import issues from Azure DevOps using a query

If you created a new story map you need to setup the Azure DevOps integration first.

If you have an active Azure DevOps integration for your story map then follow the steps below.

Open your story map and visit "Settings", then select "Integration settings". Then proceed with "Go to Integration Settings in Classic view" option. You will be redirected to the Classic story map interface to manage your integration.

Then select the "Advanced import filter" option.

Choose the query you want to use for your import.

Once you selected the query you wish to use for your import, you can also test it. If everything is all good then save your settings.

To import all issues that matches your query to your story map from Azure DevOps, click on the "Tool integration" icon and select "Import and sync changes from Azure DevOps.

Then all issues that matches to your query will be imported to the story map and stay in sync.

Please note if you have an existing story map and you enter a query to import additional issues from Azure DevOps to your story map, we will unlink all cards on the story map that is not matching to your query.

Setup your query in Azure DevOps

Please make sure that in Azure DevOps you are using "Flat list of work items" StoriesOnBoard only support Flat list of work items at the moment.
