What is a user persona

Creating user personas is a great help to describe our typical groups of users or customers. These fictional characters can personalize the target users. Personas describe people who share similar characteristics. Think of each persona as a single customer. Each persona needs to be described in detail, including his/her goals, motivations, pain points, expectations, and any other information that might be useful to know before starting development.

Persona goals help us to better define the core functionalities of the product and they’re essential to the product strategy. We only need to answer the question of what the product needs to do to solve the problems of the personalities or to satisfy their needs.


Product and local personas

Product persona

  • create product persona in Persona menu on your Dashboard

  • only Workspace Admins and Subscription Admins create and update product personas

  • any update made in product personas will be synced to all story maps on that product where you specify your product persona

  • all product personas are available to use on any story maps on teh particular product where you created your persona

Local personas

  • create local personas on the story map itself

  • it only relates to the story map where you created your persona

  • Admins and Members can create local persona on the story map

How to create a persona template

The persona template helps to create a standard structure to all user personas on StoriesOnBoard. All personas will be created according to the template.

  1. Open your Dashboard

  2. Click on “Personas”

  3. Select “Settings”

  4. Add the required custom fields

  5. Add personality custom fields


How to create product personas

Personas are created based on the predefined persona template as shown above.

  1. Open your Dashboard

  2. Click on “Personas”

  3. Select “Add a new product persona”

  4. Choose avatar

  5. Name the persona

  6. Add user role

  7. Add description

  8. Add user goals

  9. Add pains

  10. Set technical skills level

  11. Set usage frequency level

  12. Set feedback frequency level


Note: Only Workspace Admins and Subscription Admins create and update product personas.

How to create local personas

  1. Open the story map

  2. Select the “Persona” panel

  3. Click on “Add new persona”

  4. Choose avatar

  5. Name the persona

  6. Set user role

  7. Add description

  8. Add goals

  9. Add pains

  10. Set technical skills level

  11. Set usage frequency level

  12. Set feedback frequency level


How to add personas to cards

Add persona to cards | Story map view

  1. Open the story map

  2. Navigate to the card you want to add the persona

  3. Click on the three dots menu

  4. Select “Personas”

  5. Click on the persona you want to add

  1. Open the card you want to add the persona

  2. Click on add persona icon

  3. Select the persona you want to add
