Release roadmaps overview
A roadmap is always about visualizing larger chunks of a story map. The release roadmap works great if you use releases to group user stories into tangible pieces, such as 'MVP', ' Feature X', 'Capability Y' etc.
You can use each story map if you want to provide a short-term plan for upcoming releases, detailing which features, improvements, or fixes will be delivered and when. It aligns development efforts with business priorities, ensuring teams stay focused and stakeholders have clear expectations about delivery timelines.
And you can also link releases from multiple story maps if you want a high-level, long-term strategic view of multiple products or initiatives across the organization. This helps teams prioritize work based on business goals, market trends, and available resources, ensuring alignment between product development and overall company strategy. Together, these roadmaps guide teams in balancing short-term execution with long-term vision.
Roadmaps on StoriesOnBoard support teams to create and customize their roadmap structure according to their requirements.
When you create a release roadmap you can approach the creation in two ways:
Create a roadmap based on story map(s) and pull in all releases
Create an empty roadmap and build it from scratch
You can create your roadmap either of these ways, you can add new cards to the roadmap and link release(s) and/or user stories to it to track progression.
If you select multiple user stories at the beginning, you can link all releases into a roadmap card, and story maps are separated with swimlanes.
How to link release(s) to a roadmap card
Select a release or multiple releases you want to track on the given roadmap card.
Once you saved your settings, all details of your linked release(s) will be available. You can then:
track the linked release(s) progression
open the story map to see the big picture
access each release on a tracking interface
access status and estimation reports
link additional releases or user stories
unlink release(s)
You can also link multiple releases to a single roadmap card to track more significant initiatives and their progress. In this case, the status report of each linked release will be summarized in the report and displayed on the roadmap card.
Individual reports are also available in detail, as shown below. You can access the story map anytime to see the big picture and context of the backlog, access release tracking, or release specific reports.
How to link story card(s) to a roadmap card
In addition to entire releases, you can also link individual user stories to the roadmap cards. To do that, click on the 'link cards' button and select one or more cards.
This menu allows you to search for cards and link multiple items at the same time. Plus, you can come back here at any time to add or remove backlog items.
