Release and portfolio roadmaps overview

A roadmap is always about visualizing larger chunks of a story map. The release roadmap and portfolio roadmap work great if you use releases to group user stories into tangible pieces, such as 'MVP', ' Feature X', 'Capability Y' etc.

A release roadmap helps product teams by providing a short-term plan for upcoming releases, detailing which features, improvements, or fixes will be delivered and when. It aligns development efforts with business priorities, ensuring teams stay focused and stakeholders have clear expectations about delivery timelines.

A portfolio roadmap, on the other hand, offers a high-level, long-term strategic view of multiple products or initiatives across the organization. It helps teams prioritize work based on business goals, market trends, and available resources, ensuring alignment between product development and overall company strategy. Together, these roadmaps guide teams in balancing short-term execution with long-term vision.

Roadmaps on StoriesOnBoard support teams to create and customize their roadmap structure according to their requirements.

When you create a release roadmap you can approach the creation in two ways:

  1. Create a roadmap based on story map(s) and pull in all releases

  2. Create an empty roadmap and build it from scratch

You can create your roadmap either of these ways, you can add new cards to the roadmap and link release(s) and/or user stories to it to track progression.
